There are two main types of wood are made of softwood and hardwood. Another popular option is made of wood like plywood. What type of wood you choose use for your projects depends on a variety of factors including: the budget and the cost, you need the strength, hardness, grain characteristics and color stability, weight, durability and availability.
Softwood
Beginning word craftsmen often start out using as the softwood lumber pine, because as it is soft, it is easier to work, plus you do not need expensive tools to deliver quality results. Pine is readily available in timber local centers of origin and note that it has no limitations in the manufacture of furniture, as it is a soft wood and can damage easily.
Wooden Softwood comes from a coniferous (cone stand) or an evergreen. Popular varieties include fir, pine, cedar, spruce, fir and redwood. While these types timber are widely used in the construction industry in residential soils and other projects, redwood and cedar are excellent choices for outdoor projects banks, and pine is used extensively in the "Early American style Country" project bank and other furniture.
Couple of tips:
- The pine and other Softwoods generally absorb and lose more moisture than hardwood, so it is not considered as stable.
- Buy your wood from at least two weeks before starting your project and keep it inside.
- You can usually find the softwood thick and wide as standard 1 x 4 to 3 / 4 "
thick and 3 1 / 2 "wide, similar to building materials.
Keep in mind that wood is often priced per foot, with consequent price increase of more meetings.
Hardwood
Hardwood timber comes from deciduous trees. The main domestic varieties are maple, oak, birch, cherry, ash, walnut and poplar. Poplar and red oak are commonly stored in the centers of origin and woods. And shares are generally sold of similar dimensions as in the conifers, also by the linear foot. You can call ahead to see what types of wood are available and how specialty sizes in wood and building supply stores.
Working with hardwoods is quite different from working with pine. For example, you can not drive through a screw hardwood lumber without pilot hole boring. Plus cutting and planing hardwoods requires extremely sharp tools.
Hardwoods such as ash and oak forests are known as open-grained, with alternating areas of relatively porous wood and dense, and good to use with furniture craftsmanship. Open grain areas absorb the color when stained with ease, while the most difficult areas are more resistant. This tends to emphasize grain patterns and can create dramatic effect.
