This is an easy to follow, step by step guide to making an oil change.
You can easily save over a hundred dollars a year change their own oil. Also, when you do it yourself, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the job was well done with appropriate materials.
Here are the tools you need:
- A set of making 3/8-drive (metric work for both)
- A set of combination wrenches (close, and open-ended, nitric oxide donor)
- An oil filter wrench
- Something to collect the old oil - an oil pan, a bucket of age, etc.
- 2 or 3 a gallon milk containers with screw caps
- A funnel - a Ziploc baggie quarts
- A pile of old newspapers
- Several dirty rags
- Workwear
- A new oil filter (see the vehicle owner's manual requirements)
- Both oil as needed to complete the manual engine for the grade and (owner to verify how many rooms.)
STEP ONE - Drive your car around a few minutes to heat the oil, and doing enough thin, the most comprehensive tol drain the engine block. Find a flat place on your driveway, and park.
STEP TWO - Turn off the engine, put the car in motion, and set the parking brake. Block the wheels with bricks, stones or wood. Jack the car if necessary, slide under, and locate the oil drain plug.
It will be the closest to the earth, a large nut with a thin washer under it. Sometimes it will be labeled. Find the right making the nut.
STEP THREE - Turn left nut. Loosen, but do not eliminate it.
STEP FOUR - Spread newspaper under the car. Slide the drain pan under the drain plug. Loosen the cap and set aside. Oil will run out in about two minutes.
Step Five - Slide the oil filter wrench in the spanner. You probably you must use the short extension. Set the oil filter wrench to grab the left. Insert it into the oil filter and pulling. Carefully remove all the way and pour content in the drain pan. Put the used oil filter, right side up, in the newspaper.
STEP SIX - Outside, open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. S
Step Seven - Before putting the new oil filter, dip your finger in the pan, and rub some oil on the rubber gasket at the bottom of the filter. This will help better seal against the engine block. Use a rag to clean the round metal circle on the engine where the oil filter is, then thread the new filter in the post. Tighten by hand if possible (it takes about half to three quarters = one turn, no more: check instructions in the filter), or use the wrench to tighten the oil filter.
STEP EIGHT - Put the washer in place and thread the drain plug back in place. Make tight but not so tight you can not get it off next time. Now, using the funnel, pour the oil used in milk bottles. Then wipe the funnel with a rag.
STEP NINE - Place the funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in as many quarts of oil as recommended by the manufacturer. Once the oil is in turn the cap, and check the oil level with dipstick.
Step Ten - Turn on the car, and let it run for five minutes. Check for leaks. That's all.
Important Note: The EPA now requires a huge fine for improper disposal or illegal oil. Find a local oil place that accepts your dirty oil.
