Damage and losses during 2003 war
Iraq National Museum
In the months preceding the 2003 Iraq war, from December and January, several antiquities experts, including representatives of the American Council for Cultural Policy asked the Pentagon and the government the UK to ensure the safety of the museum, both combat and looting. Despite the promises were not made, U.S. forces prevented the bombing of the site.
On April 8, 2003 the last of the Museum staff left the museum. The Iraqi forces, in violation of the Geneva Conventions, U.S. forces involved from within the museum and the nearby Special Republican Guard compound. Lt. Col. Eric Schwartz of the Third U.S. Army Infantry Division said no could enter the premises and secure, as they tried to avoid returning fire in the building. Sniper positions, discarded munitions, and 15 army uniforms Iraqi were later discovered in the building. Iraqi forces had built a wall along the western side of the enclosure, allowing hidden movement between the front and rear of the museum.
The thefts took place between April 8 and 12, when some staff returned to the building. U.S. Forces, led by Marine Col. Matthew Bogdanos, stormed the compound on April 16 and opened an investigation on April 21. His research indicated that despite claims otherwise, no U.S. forces had looted the building, three steals and not separated by three different groups during the four days. While staff agreed a plan of storage to prevent theft and damage (also used during the War Iranraq and the first Gulf War), many larger statues, steles, and friezes had left in the public galleries, protected with foam and surrounded by sandbags. Forty pieces were stolen from these galleries, most of the most valuable. Of these 13 have been recovered from January 2005, including the three most valuable of the Sacred Vase of Warka (though broken into fourteen pieces, which was the original state is in when first excavated), the Mask of Warka, and the Statue of Bassetki.
In addition, storage rooms on the surface of the museum were looted, the doors exterior steel showed no signs of forced entry. Approximately 3,100 pieces of excavation (jars, vases, pottery shards, etc) were stolen, of which 3,000 have been recovered. Thefts not appear to be discriminatory, for example, a complete platform for counterfeit was stolen, while an adjacent shelf of much greater value not interrupted.
The third occurrence of theft was in underground storage rooms, where evidence pointed to an inside job. The thieves tried steal most portable objects that had been intentionally stored in the most remote place possible. Of the four rooms, the only party troubled was a unique corner in the farthest room, where cabinets containing 100 small boxes containing cylinder seals, beads, and jewelry. The evidence indicates that the thieves had the keys to the cabinets, but dropped them in the dark. Instead, they stole 10,000 small objects lying in boxes plastic on the floor. Of these, almost 2,500 have been recovered.
