Carbide Tipped Hole Saws
By: Viliam
In order to explain what a carbide tipped hole saw is, we must investigate the carbide compound. To give you a basic overview without too much scientific jargon, Carbide is a compound composed of carbon and a less electronegative element.
Some examples that you might have come across in the industry are Silicon Carbide, which is a covalent compound that is a useful abrasive. Tungsten carbide often called Carbide, is a compound specifically used for cutting tools. Carbides are important and are used to coat metals in cutting tools.
So the question that needs to be answered is, “when do we use these Carbide tipped hole saws?” Carbide tipped hole saws are commonly used when machining through materials such as steel or stainless steel. For a general rule of thumb, carbide tips are used in situations where other tools would struggle or wear away.
It’s important to also note that Carbide tipped hole saws will leave a better finish on the material you are drilling and will also allow faster machining. Another positive is that carbide tipped tools can also withstand higher temperatures than standard high speed steel tools or parts.
Now that we’ve established the importance of the carbide tip lets discuss some of the features of the Carbide Tipped Hole Saw. For starters it can cut materials up to 5mm thick. The hole saw has carbide tipped cutting edges which we have discussed already. The slug is spring ejected when the cutting process is finished making it very easy and safe to use. Its versatility is also a great feature which can be used on portable and pillar drilling machines.
The applications are limited by your imagination. Here is a list of some of the common applications, stainless steel plate, copper plate, iron plate, brass plate, aluminum plate, alloy steel plate and channel iron.
Technology has come a long way, so if you’re looking to get ahead of the game, make sure you ask for carbide tipped tools.
